Salt Spray Test Chambers

Salt Spray Chambers for Corrosion Resistance Evaluation
Salt spray testing, also referred to as salt fog testing, remains a widely used method for evaluating corrosion resistance by simulating harsh environmental conditions. This test is commonly employed to compare a product’s actual durability with its expected performance, in accordance with international testing standards. Due to its reliability and simplicity, it is a preferred solution in quality control processes.

These chambers generate an environment rich in salt-laden mist, high humidity, and elevated temperatures. Test specimens placed inside are subjected to continuous exposure to these aggressive conditions. The chambers offered by Fratelli Galli are compatible with the most widely used test protocols and are particularly well-suited for quality assurance applications.

The Standard series is optimized for continuous salt spray testing at a single, user-adjustable temperature, supporting standards such as ASTM B117, ISO 9227, and JIS Z 2371. They accommodate tests using neutral salt solutions (NSS), as well as acidic variants like acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS).

Corrosale, by Galli, is an exceptionally pure form of Sodium Chloride (NaCl), specially refined for corrosion testing.
Although common salt is readily available, finding pure, additive-free sodium chloride, as required by the Standards, is much more difficult. This is because, due to its hygroscopic nature, which causes it to clump or solidify, most commercial salts, such as table salt, require the addition of anti-caking agents—substances that are not permitted in most official test methods.
The ASTM B117 Standard, the most recognized in the world for salt spray testing, explicitly prohibits the use of anti-caking agents and also imposes strict limits on contamination levels: total impurities must be less than 0.3%, halides (excluding chloride) must be less than 0.1%, and copper must not exceed 0.3 ppm. These limits require highly purified salt.
Not only does ASTM B117 require purity, but other international corrosion testing standards are equally demanding.
To ensure that Corrosale fully meets these requirements, Galli supplies each package of Corrosale with a Certificate of Analysis that guarantees its quality.
